Transfer Credit

Requesting Transfer Credit Guidelines

The following guidelines describe the process students should use when requesting transfer credit. Please note that transfer credit is not automatic. Transfers must be approved by faculty and administration in order to make sure transfer curriculum is inline with program of study.

Maximum Number of Transfer Credits

The maximum number of transfer credits which may be applied toward a master’s degree, subject to departmental approval is:

  • Four units in programs requiring 24-32 units
  • Eight units in programs requiring 33-40 units
  • Twelve units in programs requiring 41 or more units
  • A maximum of four units of transfer credit may be applied toward an approved dual degree program

The same limits apply if a student wishes to transfer credits from any advanced degree previously completed at USC toward a master’s degree.

Transfer Work Completion

Transfer work must have been completed within seven years of admission or readmission to a USC master’s degree program to be applied toward that degree. Students wishing to transfer coursework that is more than seven years old may request to do so, but they will need to demonstrate that the content is current.

For additional information, please go to the Course Work Taken Elsewhere page in the USC Catalogue.

Requesting Transfer Credit Process

The process for requesting transfer credit is as follows:

  1. Student meets with program advisor to discuss possibility of courses being transferred.
  2. Student submits a copy of syllabi for courses wishing to be transferred to Faculty Advisor for approval.
  3. Within 30 days of approval from faculty advisor, student should submit an official transcript to Degree Progress from the other institution which shows courses and grades received in those courses.
  4. Degree Progress will send the Program Advisor and the student a report indicating which courses are eligible to be transferred into USC. This report does not indicate that these courses will be transferred to USC and applied to the degree. That decision is dependent on departmental approval.
  5. Within 30 days of approval from Degree Progress, student must complete and submit a Rossier Master’s Petition to their appropriate Program Advisor requesting that transfer work from the other institution be applied to their degree.
  6. The Program Advisor will forward the student’s petition and Credit Evaluation to the appropriate degree director and dean for official approval.
  7. The student is informed in writing by the Program Advisor of the transfer outcome.
